Sherlock Holmes Day
Did you know that this legendary character is celebrated annually on 22nd May, which is actually the birthday of his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? The author’s 56 short stories and four novels based on the fictional sleuth have left an indelible mark on literature, which is certainly cause for recognition.
Born in Edinburgh in 1859, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a prolific writer. He created Sherlock Holmes for his novel A Study in Scarlet, written in three weeks when he was 27. Holmes was partially modelled after one of Doyle’s university professors, as he tried to build up a ‘scientific detective who solved cases on his own merits and not through the folly of the criminal’. He was paid just £25 in exchange for all rights to the story when it was published in 1886. The Sherlock Holmes stories went on to become milestones in crime fiction.
